What is AB crystal?

You might have noticed references to AB crystals when browsing our hair accessories or wedding jewellery pieces. AB crystals, also known as Aurora Borealis crystals after the Northern Lights, are crystals which have been given an iridescent coating that shimmers when it catches the light.

AB bead treatments were invented by Swarovski back in 1956, in partnership with Christian Dior. The brand was on a mission to create dazzling iridescent crystals in its manufacturing process, and they discovered that coating crystals with thin layers of metal and vaporising it in a vacuum resulted in crystals that sparkled even more, especially in certain lighting conditions. And so, AB crystals were born.

Following the success of AB Crystals, Swarovski evolved this method to create AB 2x finish. The method of coating crystals results in a sparkling rainbow effect when they catch the light. They look fantastic as part of hair accessories and jewellery pieces, particularly for weddings where the bride is looking to dazzle!
